Twelve Copelands "Aesthetic Movement" Dessert Plates with Raised Paste Gold

Twelve Copelands "Aesthetic Movement" Dessert Plates with Raised Paste Gold

A rare and iconic set of 12 Copelands "Aesthetic Movement" dessert plates with pie-crust rims, retailed by Davis, Collamore, New York. Each one is uniquely hand painted and decorated with three colors of gold depicting various chrysanthemums with a "Japonesque" sensibility. The profuse raised paste gold appears as a thick impasto oil painting with a two-dimensional effect, contrasting beautifully with the ivory ground. These are exceptionally well painted and a set of 12 is quite rare. Ca.1917
