These aren't the typical set of dinner plates from Royal Doulton. This set of 12 are decorated with thick raised paste gold over a "lapis lazuli" type of decoration which distinguishes them from the more typical cobalt blue palette. The borders are decorated with alternating white and gold reserves with urns typical of Neoclassical decoration. The borders are slightly shaped and the centers, a clean white, are perfect for dinner and/or service plates. Made exclusively for Marshall Field, Chicago, even the foot rims are gilded. Ca. 1902
